About Us

                 "Ordinary People..................Amazing Things"

Do you fancy the idea of having lots of laughs, doing some good for the people in your area and around the world, and making new friends at the same time?

Danbury Lions Club is a club open to males and females, part of Lions International, the largest voluntary service organisation in the world- over 1,400,000 members with 46,000 clubs in 197 countries.

As Lions we basically get involved in 4 main areas :-

1) We raise monies for our local communities and worldwide, needs such as disasters etc.

2) We organise welfare projects to make sure that needy causes receive the monies we have raised.

3) We serve - providing transport, care, equipment etc. and any other practical help that we can see is needed to improve the quality of life for others.

4) We socialise, meeting together and with other Lions and friends for fun activities, so its not all just helping others, we enjoy what we do!

WHERE? In and around our local community but also helping with National and International crises and disasters.

WHO? Lions come from all walks of life, of all ages, and we have no political or religious associations. Our common aim is just to have fun helping others. The only requirements are that you are of an active and lively disposition and are just able to devote a little bit of time occasionally to help with what we do.

Why don't you come and try joining in with one of our meetings! you will be made to feel very welcome or feel free to bring a friend along with you, if you feel awkward arriving alone.

WHAT? Activities include assisting families in distress, working with the blind, physically and mentally disabled, helping provide hospital equipment, food parcels, providing transport and outings.

Socially we meet for informal drinks, meals, quiz nights, fun weekends away at home and abroad, car rallies, golf, ten pin bowling etc. We also meet for more formal and ceremonial events annually and provide the opportunity to meet up with members from other clubs.

WHY? Because we feel passionately that everybody should put something back into society. It is easy to be greedy and to just take, take all the time, but it brings so much more pleasure helping others.

WHEN? We  meet on the 2nd and 4th Thursday  evenings each month at 8pm , at a venue to be decided , and then plan activities for other times, but members can just give of what ever time they feel able. No pressure is applied.WE TRY TO HAVE ONE BUSINESS MEETING PER MONTH AND ONE SOCIAL MEETING.

WE HAVE A SCHEDULE OF INTERESTING SPEAKERS LINED UP,AND A GREAT VARIETY OF FUND RAISING ,SOCIAL AND WELFARE PROJECTS PLANNED.

We have set up links with Danbury Lions Club, Connecticut, U.S.A , as our twin club...and some of their Lions are joining us as Affiliate and Associate members, and we hope to visit them , and they us. See their amazing good works at      www.danburylions.org

To perhaps best summarise what Danbury Lions Club is about , would be to say that we are largely involved in four main areas, namely: Fund Raising, Charitable Distribution, Community Service and Social.

Fund Raising:- This is a prime activity in that we are always searching for new and fun ways of raising money to bolster club funds, such as  Children in Need with ''Pudsey Bear'',our Santa Sleigh Runs throughout December, Easter Eggs in Pubs, selling Quiz Sheets and holding Quiz nights, Raffles throughout the year , attending Carnivals,  Sponsored Runs and other events , , "Tin Shaking " etc etc....

Charitable Distribution: - We aim to distribute most monies of what we raise for the benefit of our local community here in Danbury and the surrounding area,The Essex Air Ambulance Service,Shopmobility scheme ,Farleigh Hospice, Age Concern, Marie Curie,  Childrens MRI Scanner with the NHS, Headway Essex, Helen Rollason, Macmillan Cancer ,Senior Citizens,  R.N.L.I ,to name just a few.We will also respond to and donate to National Charities and International projects, such as Earth Quake Appeals, Third World Water and Eye Projects etc....

Some spending is by way of donations. This might be to local Charitable organisations such as Cancer Hospices, Moulsham Grange, Local individuals ( either with disabilities or perhaps young people needing worthwhile sponsorship) or to National Charities.

Community Service:- This area of Lions time is spent on organising events or assisting others with their needs, such as Senior citizen events, providing transport for disabled people, joining in with District days out for needy families,Refuge children visit to  Circus etc.... Collecting Spectacles for the Third World , recycling mobile phones, ink cartridges, other recycling projetcs etc and assisting our Village Council with needy projects.

Social: - We run an active programme of social events for the benefit of the members, their partners, families and friends and often the sections of the community we try to help.

The main  social functions ,are Charter Night in the Autumn , always a dinner dance, Change Over Night in June, both fairly formal events, a Christmas Social, barbecues, etc  to maintain the clubs  and Lions International traditions.

We visit many different restaurants and try different Nationality foods and drink, go away for occasional weekend breaks together for a variety of fun activities, Quiz Nights, Cheese and Wine evenings, Invite outside speakers into the meetings, join with other clubs for fellowship and fun and make the most of our time as members.
